10 Lessons from 10 Years of Coaching Adolescents

These ten lessons mean a lot to me. They are not just a big part of the way I coach; they are a big part of the person I am today, and I hope they have had and will continue to have an even bigger impact on the adolescents I coach then what they do on me.

Coaching advice from someone with skin in the game

In coaching, it is not just what you do that matters, rather it is how you do it which moves people.
Championships, personal best performances, selection at a state level, competing at a national level, physical transformations, improved quality of life, and mindset transformations – these are just some of the great achievements and fulfillments of the adolescents I coach. For some of these it requires execution on one single day, in one single event, I have no control in that moment, no role to play. Instead the value I provide is in the days, weeks, months, and years leading up to that single moment. 
 
You see what proceeds that moment is a long process, a process that will be rendered pointless if it does not begin with one question; How do I get this adolescent to buy in? Investment and buy in is where any great journey should begin, but it isn’t as easy a question to answer as it may sound.

A Strength & Conditioning coach with a background in Health Science; Joel is forever learning and discovering, so that he is in the best possible position to guide his audience.

Since 2017, Joel has been the owner (and coach) of a private Personal Training business – originally out of Jetts Greensborough, before moving to a private facility at his residence (2019). In early 2019, Joel became an accredited Strength & Conditioning coach with ASCA (Australian Strength & Conditioning Association).

Currently expanding his thinking to learn more about; psychology, communication & business, Joel believes these areas will help him develop more meaningful & productive relationships with the adolescents and athletes he trains (as well as their parents).
